Las Vegas had previously hosted two Formula 1 Grands Prix in 1981 and 1982 under the Caesars Palace Grand Prix name. Both events served as the season finale, with Alan Jones winning for Williams in 1981 and Michele Alboreto securing his first F1 victory for Tyrrell in 1982. Nelson Piquet and Keke Rosberg clinched the drivers’ championships in those years, finishing fifth in their respective races.
